What is Immunotherapy and How It Can Help Fight Against Cancer?

Immunotherapy, also known as biologic therapy is a type of cancer treatment that is widely used to help your body fight infections and other diseases. In this treatment, body’s immune system is used to fight against cancer, by stopping or slowing down the growth of cancer cells, preventing cancerous cells from spreading to other parts of the body and enabling the immune system to work better by destroying cancer cells.
                                                       
                  
Types of Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is of different types. Some of the major types of immunotherapy are mentioned below:
  • Monoclonal anti-bodies and tumor-agnostic therapies- Monoclonal antibodies are also known as therapeutic anti-bodies and are produced in the labs. The functionality of these anti-bodies is to connect to specific targets found on cancer cells.
  • Cytokines- Cytokines are found naturally in the body. They belong to a group of proteins and can boost the immune system. The man-made versions of cytokines are used for the treatment of cancer.
  • Checkpoint Inhibitors- Checkpoint Inhibitors are used to treat cancers such as melanoma skin cancer and lung cancer.  However, the researches are in progress to assess its performance for other types of cancers as well.
  • Vaccines- Vaccines are available as a part of clinical trials. There are different types of cancer vaccines used as a part of immunotherapy.
  • Adoptive cell transfer- This type of immunotherapy is still new and researches are still going on to check how it works as a treatment for cancer.
Immunotherapy is a new concept and is not as relevant as other treatments available such as chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy. However, it has been approved to treat people with different types of cancer.  It is  a highly effective treatment in which body’s immune system is boosted to fight against cancer. It uses substances that are either used by the body itself or in a laboratory to restore the functioning of the immune system.
